Mom and Dad went to West Vancouver to see some creative outdoor Xmas trees decoration. I, on the other hand, am so busy working to make up my time off lately that I have not gotten a chance to go out and feel the festive atmosphere at all. Not until, I saw these pictures that I realize how close Xmas is upon us and I have yet to purchase presents! And Cheryl’s nicely customeized cards remind me that I really have to start writing cards for my dear friends too! (懺悔中...) So please forgive me if you don’t get the greetings on time (most likely will happen...) Nontheless, it’s the thoughts that count right? ^_*

For everyone who is working in the office or the lab and had to deal with office politics! (espicially, 頭)

Holiday is approaching along with the dipping temperature. Atmosphere is getting merrier. Although it is fun to window shop at the Xmas special, bumping crowd elbows to elbows especially on weekend, is not so enjoyable. However, it is still nice that December is here ^__^ Wish everybody have a merry time too!

This happened last week. Vancouver have had a cold winter unusually early this year. Last week, even during day time, the temperature had dipped below zero. On top of the usual gloves and scarf, I wore vests upon sweaters upon shirt plus the winter coat, it was a micracle that I did not roll down the icy roads especially I tried to rush indoors to avoid the brutal coldness. Weather forcasts predicted snowfall for many days yet, no single flake was to be seen until Friday night.Even though this was not my first time seeing snow, I was still excited and jumpy when I opened the front door of the house. After all, snowing IS very rare in Vancouver (except last time when Kid and Head were here).I grabbed my camera right away and rushed out down the stairs almost slipping. It was the first time I tried to capture the snow flake coming down from the sky on the digi-cam. (reminded me of us at Sunpeak, haha.)MiMi was also curious about the snow. He was not afraid to come out and explore the snow a bit. It’s funny trying to spot MiMi amist the white background in the LCD screen. There were still two passionate golfers played in the golf course on the snow covered lawns. Attention! IF you plan to watch the movie and have not done so yet, don’t read this. There might be some spoilers in the article.
After lining up for 2 hours (huge crowd; impossible to even find parking), we finally saw the movie last Saturday. I agree with Kid’s message. This movie might be unsatisfactory to book fans. Due to the huge amount of detail(600+ pages in English version, the movie has to cut out a lot of story development to fit into 3 hour of play time. Nonetheless, I was still quite excited about the movie. Among all 6 books so far, I love the Goblet of fire the most.

The idea of a triwizard tournament involving 3 different magic schools around the world is re-freshing and make the story more believable. I was pleased by the movie’s protrait of students from Beauxbatons to be so elegant and pretty. It matches my imagination to how attractive they should be to make boys loss their breath from the description of the book.
Also, another notable feature in this movie is that characters of different ethnics have started to appear, eg Cho Chang who seems to be of Chinese descent. Because of our more global society, we see multi-cultured people on the street. By incorporating this reality into movie, it makes this magical fantasy so much closer to real life that one hopes it could be found somewhere in the corner of the world.

Finally, Mom and I fulfill our dream to dine at Tojo’s last thursday.
I first heard about this restaurant was this year spring when a visiting professor from Spain told me how much he loved Japanese food and he was treated to an expensive meal at Tojo’s for almost CDN$400 for two people. It certainly piqued my interest seeing that Vancouver has good and cheap Jap. restaurant everywhere. Then I read about Tojo’s on the newspaper the week after by suprise. He apprently was in vancouver very early on when there were only 60+ Jap restaurants in North America and he was the one invented California roll (the most popular kinda sushi found in every Jap. food menu here). In the newspaper, he talked about picking good fishes is what makes good sushi. A kind of traditional value toward jap. food that I read about in comic books or seen on jap drama. So naturally, Mom wants to try it.

The reason it was delayed until now is because the restaurant, Tojo’s, is always busy, they only take reservation and they are only open at nights. So we waited until last week that we had an occasion to celebrate to go.
Every staff in the restaurant speaks fluent japanese, including a east Indian waiter. Every dish is nicely arranged with pretty presentation. And then, there were so many creative kind of sushi that we have never imagined before. For example, we tried a northern light roll with thin piece of cucumber wrapped around and a rainbow roll that has tuna and salmon sashimi on top with egg crape in the middle. The fish no only tasts so fresh that it melts in your mouth and leaves a unbelievalble taste, the roll itselfs was such an art piece that almost stop you from eating away its existence. Dad’s special tuna sashimi was heavenly too. Apparent, they only offere that around this time of the season because of the fish only prosper now. Even their mango ice cream. which was on the house because we were frist time customer, was filled with lots of real fruit chunks, top with yogourt to balance out the sweet taste. Even though Dad thinks it’s too pricy ($190 CDN for 3people), Mom and I agree that we have to go again. We understand why a person interviewed by the newspaper said that he commutes to work by biking and saves every penny just to dine at Tojo’s once a week. It IS that good!

Last Saturday,Tom and I finally found the legendary 珍珠小火鍋
自從去年在台灣 在小朋友家附近 獻出我的第一次 我就 fall in love with 涮涮鍋
Besides the fact that day was a special day (second presedential election for 陳水扁) and with special crowd (my best friends),the taste and the DIY style of eating made that experience memorable.

Ever since then, I have been looking for a store here to repeat such a wonderful experience back in Vancouver.
I had heard on the commerical about this place 珍珠小火鍋 for several years now. And ever since I know they specially sell 涮涮鍋, I drove around the area so many times trying to find it. But much like our experience in Paris’s subway system*, I just can’t find the store even though I know it is around there for sure. @#!%!#
(*題外話*: 小朋友 跟我每天都嘗試要從我們進Subway 的入口出去可是因為它門實在有太多出入口我們一直到最後一天才找對 那時候 我們認為那裡有一個異次元空間ㄋ)
Anyway, finally last saturday, we found the place. Even though it was $20 CDN per person. The meal was as good as I remembered and Tom enjoyed it too. ^____^ We shall revisit the place soon again.

Last Friday was the last day of Vancouver international film festival. A coworker gave me two free tickets for any movie at the festival. Because of time factor, we chose the very last movie, Citizen Dog. It’s a movie made in Thailand.
